Habits

I've decided I'm going to do the following habit changes:
  • Quit mindless web surfing, specifically visiting political blogs more than 1 time per day and then limiting myself to Andrew Sullivan, Matthew Yglesias, and Talking Points Memo.
  • Read 5 pages in a real book per day. I know that sounds pathetic, as I make my kids read much more, but I do a lot of other professional reading on the web.

  1. I'm surprised you don't read more real books, Bud! I just got doneeading Devil in the White City -- I think you might like it (if you're looking for suggestions!).

    My habits:

    1. I'm giving up my coffee drink habit. I can have only 1 fancy drink/ week (versus the 4-5 chai lattes I've been having recently).

    2. My healthy habit is to stretch after every workout. Sadly, I rarely ever stretch. And that's just dumb.

  2. Although I have dramatically reduced mindless surfing. I was unable to reach the goal yesterday. I'm hoping to today. Basically, I forgot that I had already visited one of the aforementioned sites, and visited it a second time.

Re reading, there was a period of a decade where I read one solid book per week. My verbal test scores were then off the charts. I'll take Devil in the White City under advisement. I've got a book on the nature of time on order. The notion of time and space conjoined really intrigues me. It has a lot of intuitive appeal and is one you can arrive on at your own even without appeal to relativistic ideas (which essentially only provide a logical in extremis stopping point for rigorous consideration of this matter).

  3. BTW, I was considering stretching as a habit but felt it was not entirely kosher given that we stretch all the time at Joust.
